This is as much light as we are getting these days. I don't really feel like taking pictures, but sometimes I force myself just to make sure I capture the winter as well. Wouldn't want to go through my photo albums and realise I've missed a whole season.

We are finally getting some more snow - if I'm lucky, I might be able to ski at the end of next week! Keep your fingers crossed for me!

Tämän enempää valoa ei nyt päivisinkään nähdä. Oikeastaan ei huvittaisi ottaa kuvia, mutta välillä pakotan itseni siihen, jotta talvikin tallentuisi muistiin. En haluaisi vanhana selata albumeja ja tajuta, että kokonainen vuodenaika puuttuu.

Lunta tulee viimeinkin lisää - jos hyvin käy, ensi viikon lopulla voi jo hiihtää! Pitäkää peukut pystyssä!

Scary scenery route

On our third day here we took a drive along the West side of the island.

Kolmantena päivänämme kävimme ajelemassa saaren länsiosassa.

There were a lot of spots on the side of the winding road, so that people could leave their cars for a while and step outside to enjoy the magnificent views.
Tien varrella oli useita pysähdyspaikkoja, joihin voi jättää autonsa halutessaan katsella huimaavan kauniita maisemia.

We only had a tiny map on a brochure, so we figured we'd drive around the island all the way to the North side, and then head back to our condo. Little did we know... suddenly the road took a turn for much worse and became a very narrow one lane road, rocks fallen off the cliffs and some very, VERY steep cliffs on the drivers side (I would have fainted if it had been me who was driving).
Meillä oli mukana vain pikkuruinen kartta jossain esitteessä, joten ajattelimme sen mukaan kiertää saaren ympäri aina pohjoispuolelle asti ja suunnata sitten takaisin hotellille. Olisipa pitänyt perehtyä asiaan vähän tarkemmin... Yhtäkkiä tie muuttui huonommaksi, suorastaan surkeaksi yksikaistaiseksi, erittäin kapeaksi reitiksi. Ylhäältä oli pudonnut kiviä keskelle tietä, ja kuskin puolella oli järkyttävän pelottavia jyrkänteitä ilman mitään esteitä tai aitoja. Itse olisin kyllä pyörtynyt, jos olisin joutunut ajamaan.

I took a lot of long video clips of our drive, but when the road got worse I couldn't bare to film anymore. I just stopped and concentrated on facing a sudden death! The last two photos are captured shots of one of the videos. The quality is poor but I'm hoping you can see at least a glimpse of how scary it was.
Kuvasin useita pitkiä videoita reitiltämme, mutta tien heikentyessä en pystynyt enää. Keskityin vain mahdolliseen äkkikuolemaan! Kaksi viimeistä kuvaa ovat pysäytyskuvia yhdeltä videoista. Laatu on kehno, mutta niistä toivottavasti näkee edes osittain kuinka pelottavaa ajaminen oli.

Later on we found out we were never supposed to have gone there. Driving on that particular road violates the car rental deal... Well, I will definitely not go back there again, but I'm glad we accidentally drove thru. The scenery was unbelievable. I'm hoping to show you a video later (once I get a nice clip ready for you) but now I am off to the beach. We've been so busy for these first days, we have completely forgot about resting!
Myöhemmin selvisi, ettei meidän olisi koskaan pitänyt mennä sinne. Kyseisellä tiellä ajaminen rikkoo autonvuokraussopimusta... No, takaisin en aio missään nimessä mennä, mutta jälkikäteen ajateltuna olen tyytyväinen, että sinne eksyttiin. Maisemat olivat unohtumattomat. Toivottavasti onnistun näyttämään teille videota myöhemmin (kun vain saan sopivan pätkän käsiteltyä valmiiksi), mutta nyt täytyy kiirehtiä rannalle. Päivät ovat olleet niin toimintaa täynnä, että rentoutuminen on unohtunut melkein kokonaan!

The first couple of days on Maui

The first couple of days went by as we walked around our neighbourhood, just enjoying the views and soaking up the atmosphere of Maui.

Most of the time there's no need for shoes. And that's quite alright with me, as I sew shoes for a living.

We can look at Mount Haleakala whenever we want to. The view is right around the corner.

Every night we get to watch this gorgeous sunset right from our balcony. Although most of the time we take the 30 second walk to the beach to see it.
Joka ilta näemme parvekkeeltamme uskomattoman auringonlaskun. Tosin useimmiten kävelemme kolmenkymmenen sekunnin matkan rannalle sitä katsomaan.

We saw the king

Yesterday, when we went to the forest again, something amazing happened.
Eilen, kun olimme taas metsässä, tapahtui jotain aivan mahtavaa.

My husband suddenly noticed *this*.
Mieheni huomasi yhtäkkiä *tämän*.

There it was, the king of the forest. A moose bull, a really big one. When my husband saw it, it was just standing there (it's incredible how quietly they can move in the forest, you only notice them when they're right next to you). When it saw us, it suddenly charged towards us for a few meters. For a while I thought it would attack; it's their mating time and they can be unpredictable at the moment. It stood there, staring right at us, and I think I whispered to my husband "it's going to come here".
Siinä se oli, metsän kuningas. Valtavan suuri hirvisonni. Kun mieheni huomasi sen, se vain seisoskeli jonkin matkan päässä (hirvi liikkuu metsässä uskomattoman hiljaisesti, sen huomaa vasta kun se on aivan lähellä). Kun sonni näki meidät, se yhtäkkiä ryntäsi meitä kohti muutaman metrin verran. Hetken aikaa luulin, että se hyökkäisi; on hirvien kiima-aika, ja ne saattavat olla nyt hieman arvaamattomia. Sonni seisoi paikallaan ja tuijotti suoraan meitä. Taisin kuiskata miehellekin, että se aikoo tulla tänne.

The moose decided it's not worth a fight, and suddenly ran away. Ran so fast I was having a hard time keeping up with it on the camera, as you can see. When they decide to move quickly, it's a little scary. It's horns were clacking on the trees, branches were braking and there was a certain sound. You know, the kind of sound you hear that immediately tells you it's something huge.
Hirvi päätti olla haaskaamatta meihin aikaansa ja lähti yhtäkkiä juoksemaan. Se juoksi niin lujaa, etten meinannut pysyä kamerallani perässä, kuten näkyy. Kun hirvet päättävät pistää vauhtia, on näky melkein pelottava. Sen sarvet hakkasivat puihin, oksat katkeilivat ja kuului sellainen ääni. Tiedättehän, ääni jonka perusteella heti arvaa kyseessä olevan jotain tosi suurta.

This was the second time that I've ever ran into moose in the forest. The first time was a few years ago, when my husband and I were on a walk in the woods as usual. That time there was a moose cow with two calves. They were walking very quietly, stared at us for a while and then just kept on going, peacefully. This moose bull was definitely more aggressive, yet I felt no fear. I was humbled by the whole experience and even though I know it could be dangerous, I wanted so much to see it again. I hope I will, some day.
Tämä oli toinen kerta eläessäni, kun törmään hirveen metsässä. Ensimmäinen kerta oli muutama vuosi sitten, kun mieheni kanssa olimme jälleen retkillämme. Silloin näimme hirviemän kahden vasansa kanssa. Ne kävelivät hiljaa, tuijottivat hetkisen meitä ja jatkoivat sitten rauhallisesti matkaansa. Tämä sonni oli huomattavasti aggressiivisempi, mutten silti osannut pelätä. Tunsin nöyrää kunnioitusta saadessani kokea jotain tällaista - ja vaikka tiesin, että se saattaisi olla vaarallista, halusin vain palavasti nähdä sen uudestaan. Ehkä vielä joskus.

Whenever I see something like this, I almost expect a goblin to walk out.

Climbing up and down the hills, jumping over ditches... My husband does not choose the easiest paths, but it's certainly a good exercise!

You are never alone in the forest. You may not see anyone (or anything), but you know they are there.
Metsässä ei koskaan ole yksin. Ketään (tai mitään) ei ehkä näy, mutta sen tuntee.

Sometimes there are a lot of *these fellows*. Harmless, but really annoying.

Some places just appeal to me, even if there's nothing special around.

Sometimes we suddenly run into a magical spot. A place that makes you feel like you're inside a storybook. This was one of those places.
Joskus törmätään yhtäkkiä taianomaiseen paikkaan, joka on kuin suoraan satukirjasta. Tämä paikka oli juuri sellainen.

Here's a little glimpse of our walk in the forest yesterday. You may have noticed that most of the photos of my husband are taken from behind. There are lots of reasons why I always follow him instead of leading... First of all, he is a hunter and carries a gun, so it's for my safety that I stay behind him. Another reason is that I am completely disoriented in the woods; I have no sense of right direction - he always knows where we are, no matter how long we've been walking around. Plus, when he goes first he finds the best spots to cross the ditches and other difficult places, and all I have to do is follow his steps!
Pieni vilaus eilisestä metsäretkestämme. Ehkä joku on huomannut, että melkein kaikki kuvat miehestäni on otettu selän takaa. On monia syitä miksi kuljen aina hänen jäljessään, enkä edellään. Tärkeimpänä se, että hän on metsästäjä ja kuljettaa mukanaan asetta. Turvallisuus siis ennen kaikkea. Lisäksi minulla ei ole minkäänlaista suuntavaistoa metsässä, kun taas hän tietää aina missä mennään - vaikka oltaisiin pyöritty ympäriinsä monta tuntia. Kaiken lisäksi hän raivaa tietä hankalissa risukoissa ja etsii parhaat ojanylityspaikat, minun tarvitsee vain seurata samoissa jalanjäljissä!

A camera recommendation

 

Ever since I got *my first DSLR camera* I have oooh'd and wow'd it's features and thought I could never go back to pocket cameras - or at least that I would not like the results at all. Lately I've gone nuts about old film cameras, and shooting film has made my interest towards digital photography even lower. There is a certain touch in film photos that digital stuff will never achieve.

There was only one problem. As we no longer had a digital pocket-size camera, there would never be photos of me unless I took them myself. My husband wasn't interested in learning to use the "complicated" DSLR, so I was always the one behind the camera. Also, as it is a piece of rather expensive equipment, I had doubts about taking it everywhere with me. What if I happened to drop it? What if it got wet? Besides, it's a big and heavy camera - and my husband has no mercy in choosing easier paths for me and my camera in the woods...

So we decided to buy a pocket camera, too. We got a Canon Powershot D20, and even though we were very aware of the price, we were more aware of the fact that we needed a camera that could handle our hikes in the nature. This one does. It's water and dustproof, it can handle a drop from 1,5m and take pictures in very cold temperatures. On top of it all if we want it to, this camera will use the GPS feature to mark the location to each photo. (That's very useful as we wander in the nature a lot.) These were the things that made us choose it, even though we had to pay a little more than we would have liked to.

Yesterday I took the camera out for a test run. I was pleasantly surprised by the quality of the photos, and the special features it has! The photos above have NOT been photoshopped in any way, I have only reduced the size to make the uploading faster. The special effects in some of the shots have been created with the camera itself, so that actually saves a lot of time, not having to use the computer to do that.

And even though all these were taken by me, my husband is finally interested in using the camera again. Yay! If you are looking for a good, durable, small camera - I highly recommend this one. There are a few things I would change (for example the layout of the buttons) and I'm still more a fan of the DSLR and film cameras, but I am quite happy about our purchase.

*Ensimmäisen digitaalisen järjestelmäkamerani* hankinnasta lähtien olen ihastellut sen monipuolisia ominaisuuksia ja ajatellut, etten koskaan voisi palata digipokkareihin - tai en ainakaan olisi niiden otoksiin tyytyväinen. Viime aikoina olen hurahtanut filmikameroihin, ja filmille kuvaaminen on vähentänyt kiinnostustani digikuvausta kohtaan entisestään. Digitaaliset kuvat eivät ole onnistuneet saavuttamaan sitä tunnelmaa, jonka filmikuvissa näen.

Oli kuitenkin pieni ongelma. Koska meillä ei enää ollut taskukokoista kameraa, minusta ei koskaan ollut kuvia ellen ottanut niitä itse. Mies ei halunnut opetella "hankalan" järjestelmäkameran käyttöä, joten minä olin aina kameran takana. Ja koska oli myös kyse aika arvokkaasta laitteesta, epäröin sen kuljettamista joka paikkaan. Entä jos pudottaisin sen? Tai jos se kastuu? Sitä paitsi, isoa ja painavaa kameraa on hankala kuljettaa kaikkialle - varsinkin, kun mies ei sääli minua valitessaan kulkureittejä metsässä...

Niinpä päätimme hankkia myös pikkupokkarin. Uusi kameramme on Canon Powershot D20, ja vaikka olimme hyvin tietoisia hintalapusta, olimme enemmän tietoisia olosuhteista joita kameran tulisi kestää. Tämä pärjää menossa mukana. Se on vesi- ja pölytiivis, kestää puolentoista metrin pudotuksen ja pakkasta. Lisäksi siinä on GPS-paikannin, joka halutessamme merkitsee kuviin koordinaatit niiden ottamispaikalla. (Varsin kätevä lisä metsäretkillämme.) Näiden ominaisuuksien vuoksi valitsimme sen, vaikka hinta ei ollutkaan aivan toivomamme.

Eilen otin kameran testiin. Olin yllättynyt suhteellisen hyvästä kuvanlaadusta, sekä erikoisominaisuuksista. Ylläolevia kuvia EI ole muokattu kuvankäsittelyohjelmalla, olen vain pienentänyt niitä lataamisen nopeuttamiseksi. Joissakin kuvissa käytetyt erikoisefektit on luotu suoraan kameralla, ja tämähän nopeuttaa huomattavasti jälkikäsittelyä, kun ei tarvitse muokata tietokoneella.

Ja vaikka kaikki nämä kuvat ovat minun ottamiani, mieheni on viimeinkin taas kiinnostunut tarttumaan kameraan! Jos etsit hyvää, kestävää ja pientä kameraa - suosittelen tätä lämpimästi. Vaikka mielelläni tekisin tähän malliin muutamia pieniä muutoksia (esim. näppäinten sijainnin suhteen) ja edelleenkin liputan järjestelmä- ja filmikameroiden puolesta, olen yllättyneen tyytyväinen ostokseemme.
