Livingroom before and after

Finally I've had a moment to take pictures of our new livingroom, or the tavern, as we call it these days. This was a change made completely by renewing the furniture; I painted this room six years ago when we moved in, and didn't want to start painting it again. We never even meant to touch this room when we started the home improvement project, but as we went on the room was begging for a change. This is what it used to look like:
Viimeinkin on ollut hetki aikaa räpsiä kuvia uudesta olohuoneestamme, tai tavernasta, joksi se on nyt nimetty. Tämä muutos tehtiin pelkästään huonekaluja vaihtamalla; maalasin kyseisen huoneen 6 vuotta sitten muuttaessamme, enkä halunnut ryhtyä uuteen maalausremonttiin vielä. Kodin kunnostuksen alkaessa tälle huoneelle ei edes pitänyt tehdä mitään, mutta homman edetessä se tuntui huutavan muutosta. Tältä siellä näytti ennen:

The room had become just a place to watch TV (and eat dinner by the telly, which I do not like). There is a fireplace in the corner but not too much room to enjoy it, as the sofas and other furniture took so much space. The room had quite a lot of light (sometimes maybe even too much) but it felt crowded and unorganised, no matter how I changed the places of the sofas.
Huoneesta oli tullut vain TV:n katselupaikka (ja paikka, jossa syödään töllön ääressä, mistä en yhtään tykkää). Nurkassa on takka, mutta ei paljon tilaa siitä nautiskeluun, koska sohva ja muut huonekalut veivät neliöitä. Huone oli kyllä valoisa (joskus ehkä liiankin), mutta tuntui ahtaalta ja epäjärjestelmälliseltä, vaikka kuinka vaihdoin huonekalujen paikkaa.

As we created the separate TV-movie-gameroom, we got rid of the old TV. We sold the old sofas and gave the TV-stand and coffee table away. We still have the big chair but I'm hoping to replace it with two or three smaller ones some day.
Kun teimme toisaalle TV-elokuva-pelihuoneen, hankkiuduimme eroon vanhasta telkkarista. Myimme sohvat ja lahjoitimme TV-tason sekä kahvipöydän pois. Iso nojatuoli on edelleen jäljellä, mutta toivon voivani korvata sen kahdella tai kolmella pienemmällä joskus myöhemmin.

Now that we had a lot more space we were able to get a dining table for six - we got it second hand for a bargain price, thanks to the buy'n'sell groups on Facebook. I bought a cotton sheet and instead of ironing, I wrinkled it up as much as I could and threw it on the table. I also got some faux tulips (real ones would have been nice, but wouldn't last a day) for each place.
Väljään tilaan pystyimme viimein hankkimaan kuuden hengen ruokailuryhmän. Se löytyi käytettynä edullisesti Facebookin osto- ja myyntiryhmästä. Ostin puuvillalakanan, mutta silittämisen sijaan rypistin sen ihan ruttuun ja heitin pöydälle. Kullekin paikalle laitoin myös tekotulppaanin (olisin suosinut oikeita, jos kestäisivät vähän kauemmin kuin päivän).

We found a three-piece bookshelf at a flea market and separated the parts, as together the dark shelves looked a bit too heavy. The beautiful old folding screen was found through Facebook, and I added some fake olive vine until I can make something grow on it for real!
Kirpputorilta löytyi kolmiosainen kirjahylly, jonka osat erotimme eri paikkoihin, ettei se näyttäisi liian raskaalta. Ihana vanha sermi löytyi taas Facebookin kautta; siihen kieputin muovista oliiviköynnöstä, kunnes saan kasvatettua sen ympärille jotain ihan oikeaa.

I found orange and brown curtains at a local store and placed them on top of each other to create a little shade for the dining spot. Then I pulled them together at the bottom with a simple orange, plastic rope. I wanted it to feel like we were sitting in a tavern, where you would almost expect a waiter to come and serve your dinner.
Oranssit ja ruskeat verhot löytyivät paikallisesta marketista. Laitoin ne päällekkäin, jotta saisin ruokailutilaan vähän enemmän varjoa. Alhaalta solmin ne yhteen yksinkertaisella oranssilla muoviköydellä. Halusin tavernamaisen tunnelman; että melkein voisi odottaa tarjoilijan yhtäkkiä saapuvan kysymään mitä saisi olla.

There still is a nice view straight to our *coffee room*.
*Kahvihuoneeseen* näkee yhä kivasti.

I fell in love with the yellow house in the beautiful picture dear *Rachel* sent me. It actually inspired me to use orange and yellow as highlight colors. The shabby white chandelier is my absolute favorite.
Ihastuin keltaiseen taloon kuvassa, jonka *Rachel* lähetti minulle. Siitä itse asiassa sain ajatuksen käyttää korosteväreinä oranssia ja keltaista. Valkoinen, kulunut kynttiläkruunu on ehdoton suosikkini.

Home improvement news

Just a little taste of our so called tavern, which used to be our livingroom. We have made some big changes again (and I haven't even showed you the movie room yet!) to make our home as comfortable as possible to live in. Hope to show you more soon!
Pikku maistiainen nk. tavernastamme, joka ennen kulki olohuoneen nimellä. Täällä on tehty taas paljon muutoksia (enkä ole edes elokuvahuonetta ehtinyt teille esitellä!), jotta kotimme olisi mahdollisimman viihtyisä. Toivottavasti ehdin esitellä sitä pian enemmän!

I thought I'd show you just a little glimpse of one of the rooms we have renewed, the one *this piece of furniture* now calls home. As soon as the sofa and the carpet arrive I will show you the rest.

Ajattelin näyttää pienen vilauksen yhdestä remontoimastamme huoneesta; siitä, joka on nyt *tämän huonekalun* koti. Heti kun uusi sohva ja matto saapuvat, näytän hela hoidon.

Entry before and after

If you have been following my blog you know we've been making some changes in our home. We bought our house 6 years ago and almost all the rooms had started to look like they needed some updating. I had already painted our whole *kitchen* last summer, then we created a cosy *coffee patio* in the beginning of this year. One by one we are renewing the rooms in our home - there's still a lot to do (and A LOT of ideas...) but we are not in a hurry! This time I thought I'd show you what I did with the entry.
Jos olet seurannut blogiani, tiedätkin jo, että kodissamme on tehty vähän muutoksia. Ostimme talomme kuusi vuotta sitten ja melkeinpä kaikki huoneet alkoivat olla päivittämisen tarpeessa. Viime kesänä maalasin koko *keittiömme*, tämän vuoden alkajaisiksi muutimme romuvarastona toimineen viherhuoneemme viihtyisäksi *kahvihuoneeksi*. Yksi kerrallaan huoneet laitetaan uuteen uskoon - paljon on vielä tehtävää (ja sitäkin enemmän ideoita...), mutta meillä ei ole kiirettä! Tällä kertaa ajattelin näyttää mitä tuulikaapille tehtiin.

In the entry we have the fuse panel of the house, and below a couple of closets for shoes. These were all covered from top to bottom with a very ugly bamboo curtain, which made the entry even smaller. I actually like bamboo curtains a lot, but this one was probably 15 years old, broken, and not very pretty to look at. Somehow it just stayed there when we moved in because the fuse panel would have been even nastier...
Tuulikaapissa on talomme sähkötaulu ja sen alapuolella pari kaappia kenkiä varten. Nämä kaikki oli peitetty ylhäältä alas asti rumalla bambuverholla, joka sai tuulikaapin tuntumaan entistäkin pienemmältä. Oikeastaan kyllä pidän bambuverhoista, mutta tämä oli varmaan 15 vuotta vanha, rikkinäinen ja hirvitys. Jotenkin se vain jäi siihen taloon muuttaessamme, koska sähkötaulu olisi ollut vielä ankeampaa katseltavaa...

I took the bamboo curtain down and painted the wall and the top of the closet grey. The rest of the walls are white with the same grey, scruffy decorations I used in our kitchen. As I brought in the rose painting, I realised pink would be the highlight color of this little place.
Heitin bambuverhon menemään ja maalasin sen takana olevan seinän, sekä kaappienpäällisen harmaaksi. Loput seinistä ovat maalarinvalkoisia, samoilla suttuisilla koristuksilla kuin keittiössäkin. Kun toin tähän muodostuneelle pöydälle ruusutaulun, tajusin, että käyttäisin korostusvärinä vaaleanpunaista.

Now, there was still an issue with the ugly fuse panel. Some years ago I found 4 grey rose curtains at a flea market - they happened to be the exact same grey as the wall I had just painted. The pink fabric on the sides used to be a curtain, too; I remember it from our home back in the '80s! So I just sewed it all together and the problem was solved. (My husband hates it when I spare "useless old stuff" instead of throwing it away - well, ha ha to him!) I also realised I had created the perfect spot for all my vintage cameras.
Jäljelle jäi vielä ruma sähkötaulu-ongelma. Pari vuotta sitten löysin kirpputorilta neljä ruusuverhoa - sattuivat sopivasti olemaan juuri samaa harmaata, kuin tuo vasta maalattu seinä. Vaaleanpunainen kangas reunoilla oli aikoinaan myös verho; muistan sen kotoani 80-luvulta! Tein siis vain vähän ompeluhommia ja ongelma oli ratkaistu. (Miestäni ärsyttää suuresti, kun säästän kaikenlaista "turhaa romua" - siitäs sai!) Samalla tuli luotua täydellinen säilytyspaikka vintagekameroilleni.

On the other wall there was a door that we hadn't closed one single time since we moved into this house. We took it down and dragged it up to the attic - okay, I have to admit hubby did all the hard work on this one... By removing the door and hanging a mirror on the wall we made the entry feel even more spacious. (Behind that door you can see a glimpse of the entrance of our *coffee patio*.)
Tuulikaapin toista seinää vasten oli ovi, jota emme olleet sulkeneet kertaakaan koko talossa asumisemme aikana. Otimme sen irti ja raahasimme vintille - no joo, pakko myöntää, että tässä kohti miehestä oli apua... Oven poistaminen ja peilin ripustaminen seinälle tekivät tuulikaapista vieläkin tilavamman oloisen. (Tuon kuvassa olevan oven takaa näkyy pilkahdus *kahvihuoneen* sisäänkäynnistä.)

As a final touch I brought in two small rugs. We got these from my mother-in-law years ago, and they seemed to be the wrong color whenever I tried to use them in different rooms. Not this time, they are the perfect rosy pink.
Viime silauksena laitoin vielä lattialle kaksi pientä mattoa. Saimme ne anopiltani vuosia sitten ja ne tuntuivat aina joka huoneeseen väärän värisiltä. Ei enää, sillä ne ovat täydellisen vaaleanpunaiset.

I'd say this was a very non-expensive makeover!
Varsin halvalla toteutettu muodonmuutos, vai mitä!

Jigsaw puzzle

Exactly what our kitchen needed. This was my very first IKEA purchase, but not the last one, I think.
Juuri tätä keittiömme kaipasi. Tämä oli ensimmäinen IKEA-ostokseni, muttei ehkä viimeinen.

The home improvement is finally done for now, phew! There are a few more rooms in the house we haven't touched yet, but we are definitely going to have a break and enjoy what we've done so far. Seems to me all of these painting projects have followed the same "unwritten rules". First excitement, then planning, then going for it, in the middle comes the desperate rage ("This will never be finished!"), then more excitement as the project seems to come to an end after all, and finally extremely sore muscles, aching knees and huge satisfaction of making such a big change happen by yourself.
Pintaremontointi on viimein ohitse, ainakin toistaiseksi. Talostamme löytyy vielä muutama huone, joihin emme ole koskeneet, mutta nyt pidetään kyllä tauko ja vain nautiskellaan tähänastisista saavutuksista. Jokainen näistä maalausprojekteista on tuntunut menevän saman kaavan mukaan. Ensin innostusta, sitten suunnittelua, työhön ryhtymistä, keskivaiheilla epätoivoista raivoa ("Tää ei valmistu koskaan!"), sitten taas lisää intoa projektin näyttäessä paremmalta, ja lopulta jumittuneet lihakset, tuskaisen kipeät polvet ja hirmuista tyytyväisyyttä, kun on itse saanut ison muutoksen aikaiseksi.

Today...

We are still at -31C, so I will stay inside and continue splashing more paint on the walls. You know how it is; you get one room done and suddenly the others start to look so messy and old you have to fix them up, too... But first I will make myself a nice hot pot of coffee and pick up some more wood for the fireplace.
Edelleenkin -31 mittarissa, joten pysyttelen sisätiloissa ja jatkan seuraavien seinien maalaamista. Tiedättehän; kun saa yhden huoneen valmiiksi, muut alkavat näyttää niin vanhanaikaisilta, että nekin on pakko laittaa uusiksi. Ensin taidan kyllä keittää kunnon kahvit ja uskaltautua ulos hakemaan takkapuita.

Today is also the election day here in Finland; by night we'll know who will become our next president. Many people have a tradition of dressing up nicely when they go for the vote, but I'm telling you - I will most likely wear what I was wearing *here*!
Tänäänhän jännitetään myös uuden presidentin valintaa. Monilla taitaa olla tapana pukeutua vähän hienommin äänestystä varten, mutta itse ajattelin kyllä vetää niskaani kerrokset, joista mainitsin *täällä*!

Can one marry a TV-stand..?

Remember when I told you *here* how I like to buy almost all of my clothes in drift stores, to save money and use it for something I really like..? Well, this is what I used it for. As the home improvement-project continues, my husband and I painted one of our bedrooms and decided to make it as close to a movie theater as possible (more about the room itself later). I found the perfect TV-stand, perfect, perfect, perfect in every way! It is completely made of recycled materials; old doors, window panes and food cans. So, you see, it has had many lives before this one. Perhaps some of the parts are a lot older than me! It was a lot more expensive than the common TV-stands, so we did have a conversation over it before the purchase. But it's unique (no two stands are exactly the same) and made in an eco-friendly way, so we decided this is a moment when it's better to spend than spare. I'm so happy!
Muistattekos, kun *täällä* kerroin ostavani suurimman osan vaatteista kierrätyksestä, ja käyttäväni säästyneet rahat asioihin, joista todella pidän..? Tähän minä ne nyt käytin. Kodin kunnostusprojektin jatkuessa maalasimme mieheni kanssa yhden makuuhuoneista, ja päätimme tehdä siitä niin elokuvateatterimaisen kuin mahdollista (itse huoneesta lisää myöhemmin). Löysin täydellisen, täydellisen TV-tason! Se on kokonaan valmistettu kierrätysmateriaaleista; vanhoista ovista, ikkunapuitteista ja peltipurkeista. Sillä on siis ollut jo monta elämää ennen tätä. Ehkä jotkut osista ovat minuakin vanhempia! Taso oli huomattavasti kalliimpi kuin monet jokakodintasot, joten asiasta keskusteltiin ennen hankintaa. Se on kuitenkin ainutlaatuinen (yksikään tuote ei ole tismalleen samanlainen toisen kanssa) ja tehty ympäristöä kunnioittaen, joten päätimme, että tässä kannattaa mieluummin maksaa, kuin kitsastella. Voikohan TV-tason kanssa mennä naimisiin, on se niin ihana! (Ja vaikkei minulla ole tapana mainostaa, kyseisestä kierrätyshuonekalusarjasta löytyy lisätietoa *täältä*.)
