Food - at the summer cottage

Oh yes, we enjoyed our food out there. Out, literally. Everything was cooked outside and I think we only dined inside the cottage once, when it was rainy. Food tastes so incredibly good when you're out on the patio, you can hear the sound of the waves (and the mosquitos) and the night is getting dark. It's not pitch black here in Finland at this time of year, but we always dined so late (10 p.m. or so) because the days were so filled with stuff to do. Stuff more important than eating; like sitting on the stairs in the sun, taking a daytime nap, heating up the sauna, fishing, just enjoying it all. I think I need to get a bite to eat now.

Ruoasta todella nautittiin. Kaikki kokattiin ulkosalla, ja itse ruokailukin tapahtui ulkona yhtä sadepäivän poikkeusta lukuunottamatta. Miten järjettömän hyvältä mikä tahansa ruoka maistuukaan terassilla, aaltojen liplattaessa (ja hyttysten inistessä), kun ilta jo pimenee. Melkein joka kerralla ruokailu venähti iltakymmeneen, koska päivällä oli niin paljon muuta tekemistä. Tärkeämpää kuin syöminen; kuten auringonpalvonta, nokkaunet, saunanlämmitys, kalastus, ja ihan vain lomasta nautiskelu. Nyt täytyy lähteä jääkaapille.

There are many ways to try and catch a fish. I was lazy and only tried one - fortunately the guys were enthusiastic and we definitely didn't have to starve ourselves.

On monta tapaa kalastaa, mutta laiskuuksissani kokeilin nyt vain yhtä. Onneksi miehillä oli kalaonnea, eikä meidän todellakaan tarvinnut nääntyä nälkään.

A proper fishing trip starts with engine problems, coming back to shore, trying to fix it all night and having to wait until the next day for a friend to bring new parts for the outboard motor.

Kunnon kalareissu alkaa koneongelmilla, takaisin rantaan palaamisella, koko illan kestävällä korjausoperaatiolla, ja odottamalla seuraavaan päivään, kunnes kaveri tuo perämoottoriin varaosia.

Oh but they got there after all!

Last week good stuff

I decided to dedicate this good stuff-post to my first fishing trip this summer. We went on it yesterday evening and it was so great. I caught a very small pike but it got loose before I could get it into the boat. (It was too small to eat, anyway...) Other than that the fish weren't hungry at all; we were, as we didn't catch dinner! I loved it, though, and can't wait to go again.

Viime viikon huippujutut päätin omistaa eilisillan kalareissulle, ensimmäiselleni tänä kesänä. Sain ihan pienen hauen, mutta sekin pääsi irti ennen kuin ehdin nostaa sitä veneeseen. (Liian pieni se olisi ollut syötäväksi kuitenkin.) Kalat eivät olleet nälkäisiä; me kylläkin, kun päivällinen jäi pyydystämättä. Oli se silti mahtavaa, toivottavasti päästään pian uudelleen.
