Rock. I mean rock!

On Thursday I got a desperate call from my sister. Her son (my godson) and the other kids on the highschool music class were going to have a concert that night, and she couldn't go because of another appointment. Someone was supposed to video the event but became sick, and she didn't know who else to turn to. I was going to be in a rush to make it there after work, but I'm so glad I decided to go. Later on I found out my niece and our goddaughter were performing too. They were all so awesome! Going up on that stage in front of everyone (at that age, when you are kind of fragile and so concious of yourself) is something I have to admire. And as my godson played the drums, the bass, the keyboards, the guitar AND singed (and probably made his girlfriend's heart flutter), I was almost in tears and thought what an Earth happened to that baby boy who used to chuckle at my funny face 16 years ago. Am I getting old..?
He kaikki olivat ihan uskomattomia! Olenko tulossa vanhaksi..?

I'm back here again, at the little cabin of the *Tiny Little Story* that I told you in my old blog. My sister will be here any minute now, bringing our Grandma with her. I'm so excited!
Olen taas täällä, *Pikkuruisen Tarinan* mökillä, josta kerroin vanhassa blogissani. Minä hetkenä hyvänsä siskoni saapuu mummun kanssa. Ihan mahtavaa!

Colorful Easter

Here in Finland Easter is a colorful time. Children pick up willow twigs with catkins and decorate them with colorful feathers. Then they dress up as Easter witches (or kittens, or these days whatever characters they like) and go from door to door to wish good luck for the upcoming year. In return they get candy or small coins. It's kind of like Halloween trick or treating, which we do not have.
This year my nieces and I added some colorful yarns to the twigs. They were so pretty I almost wanted to keep all of them to myself! Well, I did have to let them go after all. And I got a lot of beautiful twigs back, as my doorbell rang quite often and I found many little witches behind my door. You will see them later!
Tänä vuonna lisäsimme tyttöjen kanssa virpomisvitsoihin värikkäitä lankoja. Meilläpäin muuten virvotaan vasta lankalauantaina palmusunnuntain sijaan. Vitsoista tuli niin hienoja, etten meinannut raaskia luopua niistä! Onneksi sain monta pajunkissaoksaa takaisin, kun oven takana kävi toinen toistaan mainiompia pikkunoitia. Heistä lisää myöhemmin!

Overwhelmed

There are moments in life - sometimes rare, sometimes more frequent, when you feel overwhelmed with happiness and gratitude. To me those moments are often about the little things. Like having your two nieces over for Easter and picking up willow twigs with them on a beautiful sunny afternoon. Being so close to spring you can almost smell it. Yet, walking on winter-hardened, solid snow.

To make it all better

Yesterday I was ill and stayed home. It's weird how your mind turns blue, too, if your body isn't feeling well. Here I was, having a stomach ache, feverish, seeing the beautiful sun through the window, watching TV (there was absolutely nothing on), having too much time to think about silly negative things in my life. By the evening I was feeling so crappy and sorry for myself, I even snapped at my dear husband for no reason. I love him for seeing through it and not giving into a fight.

This morning I decided to make it up both to him and myself and started baking as soon as I got up. I mean, who doesn't like fresh, hot bread straight from the oven?
Tänä aamuna päätin hyvittää kaiken hänelle ja itsellenikin ryhtymällä leipomaan heti kun sain silmät auki. Kuka nyt ei tykkäisi uunituoreesta leivästä?

YEAST BREAD

2,5dl water
11g dry yeast (or 30g fresh)
1 teaspoon of salt
1 tablespoon of syrup (or 2 teaspoons of sugar)
0,25dl vegetable oil
6dl yeast bread flour (you can also use regular wheat flour)

If you are using fresh yeast, mix it with warm (37C) water with salt and syrup/sugar. If you use dry yeast, mix it with a part of the flour, then stir it well into warm water (42C) with salt and syrup/sugar.
Add flour until you have about half of it left. Give the dough a good stir. Then add the rest of the flour and finally the vegetable oil. Set the dough into a warm place and cover with a kitchen towel until it has doubled it's size. Work it into a round bread, cut decorations with a sharp knife and let stay under the towel for about 10 more minutes. Bake in the oven in 200 degrees Celcius for 20-25 minutes.

HIIVALEIPÄ

2,5dl vettä
11g kuivahiivaa (tai 30g tuoretta)
1tl suolaa

Lisää taikinaan jauhoja, kunnes niitä on noin puolet jäljellä. Sekoita taikinaa tässä vaiheessa kunnolla. Lisää sitten loput jauhot ja viimeisenä öljy. Anna kohota lämpimässä paikassa liinan alla, kunnes taikina on paisunut kaksinkertaiseksi. Leivo taikinasta pyöreä leipä, koristele tekemällä viiltoja terävällä veitsellä ja kohota liinan alla vielä kymmenisen minuuttia. Paista 200 asteessa 20-25 minuuttia.

1920

Grandma turned 92 today. She wasn't even seven years old when she had to leave home for the first time, to learn to become a housemaid in town. It's almost unbelievable how much the world has changed in her lifetime, and how much new information she has had to absorb during the latest decades. I'm not sure if I can do the same in my future!
