Iao Valley

A couple of days ago we took a spontaneous trip up to *Iao Valley State Park*. We had expected quite a hike up there, but it was just a little one after all. We wouldn't have minded a very long walk in the rainforest, but even though the visit was short, the views were gorgeous. Definitely worth the short drive.
Pari päivää sitten lähdimme hetken mielijohteesta käymään *Iao Valleyn puistossa*. Olimme odottaneet melkoista vaellusta, mutta reitti olikin vain ihan pikkuinen. Meitä ei olisi ollenkaan haitannut parin tunnin reipas kävely sademetsässä, mutta vaikka kierros oli lyhyt, maisemat olivat vertaansa vailla. Kannatti vaivautua!

The high peek (about 1,200 ft. from the valley floor) is called Iao Needle and was used as a lookout spot by ancient warriors. My gosh. I would not climb up there for the world!
Korkeaa huippua (370m laakson pohjasta) sanotaan Iaon neulaksi, ja muinaiset soturit käyttivät sitä tähystyspaikkanaan. Minua ei saisi sinne kirveelläkään!

Westin Maui Resort and Spa

For Halloween in Lahaina we decided to stay in town for the night; instead of driving back and forth in terrible traffic, looking out for possible drunk drivers. *Lahaina Halloween* is a super popular event here on Maui, attracting even 20-30 000 people every year (more about the event in my next post). Better safe than sorry, we thought, and chose *The Westin Maui Resort and Spa* as our destination.

Jo ennen matkalle lähtöä päätimme viettää Halloweenia Lahainan kaupungissa, ja samalla päätimme yöpyä siellä sen sijaan, että ajelisimme edestakaisin kauheassa ruuhkassa peläten mahdollisia rattijuoppoja. *Lahaina Halloween* on hurjan suosittu tapahtuma täällä Mauilla, ja houkuttelee vuosittain jopa 20-30 000 kävijää (siitä lisää myöhemmin). Valitsimme kohteeksemme hotellin nimeltä *Westin Maui Resort and Spa*.

The place was amazing. We had not expected such luxury for the very reasonable price we paid for the night. (Although, one must remember coming from Finland we are used to higher prices even in mediocre hotels.) As we checked in we heard the magic words; "Oh, someone must have liked you. You've been upgraded to a better room." What a view! And the beds! My husband wouldn't even let me crawl next to him, he insisted on having the huge bed all to himself. And he did sleep like a baby!

Paikka oli ihan uskomaton. Emme osanneet odottaa sellaista luksusta hinnalla, jonka yöstä maksoimme. Tosin Suomessahan olemme tottuneet maksamaan melko kovia hintoja jo keskinkertaisissa hotelleissa. Sisäänkirjautuessamme meille vielä tapahtui se, jota yleensä on totuttu näkemään vain elokuvissa: "Joku on näköjään pitänyt teistä. Teidät on siirretty parempaan huoneeseen." Mitkä näköalat, ja sängyt! Mies ei edes suostunut ottamaan minua viereensä yöksi, vaan vaati saada nukkua koko sängyn leveydellä. Sikeästi nukkuikin.

The pool area seemed endless, with a straight access to the beach. Free beach towels that you could change into clean and dry ones as often as you liked. A nice bar for picking up "a little snack" when we got hungry. And another bar for those perfect Mai Tai's - the first ones we had since we arrived on this beautiful island!

Allasalue jatkui silmänkantamattomiin ja sieltä pääsi suoraan rannalle. Käytössä oli maksutta rantapyyhkeitä, joita sai vaihtaa uusiin ja kuiviin aina kun halusi. Mukava baari, josta pääsi hakemaan "pientä välipalaa" nälän iskiessä. Ja toinen, josta haimme reissun ensimmäiset Mai Tait. Ihan mahtavaa!

There were even special pools for flamingos, a black swan and the beautiful *koi-fish*. At night the hotel and the pool area turned into something that seemed a secret garden. We nearly asked if they had vacancy so we could stay for another night, but as we had time to enjoy the pools for another few hours in the morning before we checked out, we decided it was time to head back "home" to our condo in Kihei.

Omissa altaissaan oli jopa flamingoja ja musta joutsen, sekä *koi-kaloja* (eräänlaisia karppeja). Illalla hotelli allasalueineen muuttui kuin salaiseksi puutarhaksi. Melkein jo kysyimme olisiko hotellissa vapaata, jotta voisimme jäädä toiseksikin yöksi. Aamulla ehdimme kuitenkin nautiskella auringosta altaalla muutaman tunnin ajan, joten päätimme suunnata takaisin "kotiin" Kiheihin.

Scary scenery route

On our third day here we took a drive along the West side of the island.

Kolmantena päivänämme kävimme ajelemassa saaren länsiosassa.

There were a lot of spots on the side of the winding road, so that people could leave their cars for a while and step outside to enjoy the magnificent views.
Tien varrella oli useita pysähdyspaikkoja, joihin voi jättää autonsa halutessaan katsella huimaavan kauniita maisemia.

We only had a tiny map on a brochure, so we figured we'd drive around the island all the way to the North side, and then head back to our condo. Little did we know... suddenly the road took a turn for much worse and became a very narrow one lane road, rocks fallen off the cliffs and some very, VERY steep cliffs on the drivers side (I would have fainted if it had been me who was driving).
Meillä oli mukana vain pikkuruinen kartta jossain esitteessä, joten ajattelimme sen mukaan kiertää saaren ympäri aina pohjoispuolelle asti ja suunnata sitten takaisin hotellille. Olisipa pitänyt perehtyä asiaan vähän tarkemmin... Yhtäkkiä tie muuttui huonommaksi, suorastaan surkeaksi yksikaistaiseksi, erittäin kapeaksi reitiksi. Ylhäältä oli pudonnut kiviä keskelle tietä, ja kuskin puolella oli järkyttävän pelottavia jyrkänteitä ilman mitään esteitä tai aitoja. Itse olisin kyllä pyörtynyt, jos olisin joutunut ajamaan.

I took a lot of long video clips of our drive, but when the road got worse I couldn't bare to film anymore. I just stopped and concentrated on facing a sudden death! The last two photos are captured shots of one of the videos. The quality is poor but I'm hoping you can see at least a glimpse of how scary it was.
Kuvasin useita pitkiä videoita reitiltämme, mutta tien heikentyessä en pystynyt enää. Keskityin vain mahdolliseen äkkikuolemaan! Kaksi viimeistä kuvaa ovat pysäytyskuvia yhdeltä videoista. Laatu on kehno, mutta niistä toivottavasti näkee edes osittain kuinka pelottavaa ajaminen oli.

Later on we found out we were never supposed to have gone there. Driving on that particular road violates the car rental deal... Well, I will definitely not go back there again, but I'm glad we accidentally drove thru. The scenery was unbelievable. I'm hoping to show you a video later (once I get a nice clip ready for you) but now I am off to the beach. We've been so busy for these first days, we have completely forgot about resting!
Myöhemmin selvisi, ettei meidän olisi koskaan pitänyt mennä sinne. Kyseisellä tiellä ajaminen rikkoo autonvuokraussopimusta... No, takaisin en aio missään nimessä mennä, mutta jälkikäteen ajateltuna olen tyytyväinen, että sinne eksyttiin. Maisemat olivat unohtumattomat. Toivottavasti onnistun näyttämään teille videota myöhemmin (kun vain saan sopivan pätkän käsiteltyä valmiiksi), mutta nyt täytyy kiirehtiä rannalle. Päivät ovat olleet niin toimintaa täynnä, että rentoutuminen on unohtunut melkein kokonaan!
