Easter bonfires are common around the part of Finland I live in. They are burned on Holy Saturday and people used to believe they would chase the bad spirits away. When I was a child this was the most important Easter event for me. It was exciting to stay up late and watch the big fire. Sometimes our parents also drove us around town to see other fires - but more often people came to see ours (there's a field right in front of my parents' house and we were able to make big fires there).
Joskus vanhempamme kuljettivat meitä autolla ympäri kylää muita kokkoja katsomassa, mutta useimmiten ihmiset vierailivat meidän kokollamme (vanhempieni talon edessä on pelto, johon pystyimme tekemään varsin suuria kokkoja).
When I became older the bonfires sort of lost their meaning. I haven't been to one in years. But this year I noticed I would have loved to have one. My husband said the same thing. I guess when you get older you long for the things you had in your childhood... Anyway, since my Dad passed away we haven't had the same kind of bonfires we used to. These photos are from 1998, when my husband and I had only been dating for a few months. I remember how we went to the forest with my Dad and collected a huge pile of tree branches. It certainly was a fire to remember and I cherish those moments even more now. I'm thinking next year we need to build a big one again.
Vanhemmaksi tultuani kokot jotenkin menettivät merkityksensä. En ole käynyt kokolla vuosiin. Tänä pääsiäisenä kuitenkin huomasin kaipaavani sitä. Mieheni sanoi ihan samaa.

Casting spells (good ones!)
*Here* you can read what this is all about. Need I say I was smiling all day?
Lankalauantai oli täynnä ihania virpojia.

Colorful Easter
Here in Finland Easter is a colorful time. Children pick up willow twigs with catkins and decorate them with colorful feathers. Then they dress up as Easter witches (or kittens, or these days whatever characters they like) and go from door to door to wish good luck for the upcoming year. In return they get candy or small coins. It's kind of like Halloween trick or treating, which we do not have.
This year my nieces and I added some colorful yarns to the twigs. They were so pretty I almost wanted to keep all of them to myself! Well, I did have to let them go after all. And I got a lot of beautiful twigs back, as my doorbell rang quite often and I found many little witches behind my door. You will see them later!
Tänä vuonna lisäsimme tyttöjen kanssa virpomisvitsoihin värikkäitä lankoja. Meilläpäin muuten virvotaan vasta lankalauantaina palmusunnuntain sijaan. Vitsoista tuli niin hienoja, etten meinannut raaskia luopua niistä! Onneksi sain monta pajunkissaoksaa takaisin, kun oven takana kävi toinen toistaan mainiompia pikkunoitia. Heistä lisää myöhemmin!
Overwhelmed
There are moments in life - sometimes rare, sometimes more frequent, when you feel overwhelmed with happiness and gratitude. To me those moments are often about the little things. Like having your two nieces over for Easter and picking up willow twigs with them on a beautiful sunny afternoon. Being so close to spring you can almost smell it. Yet, walking on winter-hardened, solid snow.
