A camera recommendation

 

Ever since I got *my first DSLR camera* I have oooh'd and wow'd it's features and thought I could never go back to pocket cameras - or at least that I would not like the results at all. Lately I've gone nuts about old film cameras, and shooting film has made my interest towards digital photography even lower. There is a certain touch in film photos that digital stuff will never achieve.

There was only one problem. As we no longer had a digital pocket-size camera, there would never be photos of me unless I took them myself. My husband wasn't interested in learning to use the "complicated" DSLR, so I was always the one behind the camera. Also, as it is a piece of rather expensive equipment, I had doubts about taking it everywhere with me. What if I happened to drop it? What if it got wet? Besides, it's a big and heavy camera - and my husband has no mercy in choosing easier paths for me and my camera in the woods...

So we decided to buy a pocket camera, too. We got a Canon Powershot D20, and even though we were very aware of the price, we were more aware of the fact that we needed a camera that could handle our hikes in the nature. This one does. It's water and dustproof, it can handle a drop from 1,5m and take pictures in very cold temperatures. On top of it all if we want it to, this camera will use the GPS feature to mark the location to each photo. (That's very useful as we wander in the nature a lot.) These were the things that made us choose it, even though we had to pay a little more than we would have liked to.

Yesterday I took the camera out for a test run. I was pleasantly surprised by the quality of the photos, and the special features it has! The photos above have NOT been photoshopped in any way, I have only reduced the size to make the uploading faster. The special effects in some of the shots have been created with the camera itself, so that actually saves a lot of time, not having to use the computer to do that.

And even though all these were taken by me, my husband is finally interested in using the camera again. Yay! If you are looking for a good, durable, small camera - I highly recommend this one. There are a few things I would change (for example the layout of the buttons) and I'm still more a fan of the DSLR and film cameras, but I am quite happy about our purchase.

*Ensimmäisen digitaalisen järjestelmäkamerani* hankinnasta lähtien olen ihastellut sen monipuolisia ominaisuuksia ja ajatellut, etten koskaan voisi palata digipokkareihin - tai en ainakaan olisi niiden otoksiin tyytyväinen. Viime aikoina olen hurahtanut filmikameroihin, ja filmille kuvaaminen on vähentänyt kiinnostustani digikuvausta kohtaan entisestään. Digitaaliset kuvat eivät ole onnistuneet saavuttamaan sitä tunnelmaa, jonka filmikuvissa näen.

Oli kuitenkin pieni ongelma. Koska meillä ei enää ollut taskukokoista kameraa, minusta ei koskaan ollut kuvia ellen ottanut niitä itse. Mies ei halunnut opetella "hankalan" järjestelmäkameran käyttöä, joten minä olin aina kameran takana. Ja koska oli myös kyse aika arvokkaasta laitteesta, epäröin sen kuljettamista joka paikkaan. Entä jos pudottaisin sen? Tai jos se kastuu? Sitä paitsi, isoa ja painavaa kameraa on hankala kuljettaa kaikkialle - varsinkin, kun mies ei sääli minua valitessaan kulkureittejä metsässä...

Niinpä päätimme hankkia myös pikkupokkarin. Uusi kameramme on Canon Powershot D20, ja vaikka olimme hyvin tietoisia hintalapusta, olimme enemmän tietoisia olosuhteista joita kameran tulisi kestää. Tämä pärjää menossa mukana. Se on vesi- ja pölytiivis, kestää puolentoista metrin pudotuksen ja pakkasta. Lisäksi siinä on GPS-paikannin, joka halutessamme merkitsee kuviin koordinaatit niiden ottamispaikalla. (Varsin kätevä lisä metsäretkillämme.) Näiden ominaisuuksien vuoksi valitsimme sen, vaikka hinta ei ollutkaan aivan toivomamme.

Eilen otin kameran testiin. Olin yllättynyt suhteellisen hyvästä kuvanlaadusta, sekä erikoisominaisuuksista. Ylläolevia kuvia EI ole muokattu kuvankäsittelyohjelmalla, olen vain pienentänyt niitä lataamisen nopeuttamiseksi. Joissakin kuvissa käytetyt erikoisefektit on luotu suoraan kameralla, ja tämähän nopeuttaa huomattavasti jälkikäsittelyä, kun ei tarvitse muokata tietokoneella.

Ja vaikka kaikki nämä kuvat ovat minun ottamiani, mieheni on viimeinkin taas kiinnostunut tarttumaan kameraan! Jos etsit hyvää, kestävää ja pientä kameraa - suosittelen tätä lämpimästi. Vaikka mielelläni tekisin tähän malliin muutamia pieniä muutoksia (esim. näppäinten sijainnin suhteen) ja edelleenkin liputan järjestelmä- ja filmikameroiden puolesta, olen yllättyneen tyytyväinen ostokseemme.

Over and over again

I'm stating over and over again; this is my favorite time of the year. I do not mind the busy weekdays, as long as on weekends I get to go out, smell the cool, fresh air and charge my batteries.

Kerta toisensa jälkeen totean, että tämä on vuodenajoista parhain. Arjen kiireet eivät haittaa, jos vain viikonloppuisin pääsen ulos tuonne viileän raikkaaseen ilmaan paristojani lataamaan.

Nothing to do - at the summer cottage

Sometimes there was just absolutely nothing to do at the cottage, and I loved it.

Countryside girl

That's what Atena is, and she wants to wish the greatest Midsummer to whoever is celebrating it. Here in Finland there are a lot of Midsummer festivities, but this year my husband is working all weekend so we are just having a quiet time at home. I do like that as well.

Maalaistyttö Atena toivottaa kaikille ihanaa juhannusta! Meillä sitä ei juurikaan tänä vuonna vietetä, koska mies on kiinni töissä. Juhannusmieli pidetään silti korkealla.

Coming and going

Such a nice, long walk in the sun yesterday. There was a very chilly breeze, don't let the pictures fool you. We are so grateful that our dear labrador Jedi is still able to take these walks with us, even though he is almost 13 years old.
Ihana, pitkä kävelylenkki aurinkoisessa, mutta tosi kylmässä tuulessa eilen. Olemme kovin kiitollisia siitä, että melkein 13-vuotias labradorimme Jedi jaksaa edelleen innolla lähteä näille kävelyille.
I think this flue is finally taking me over, I may have to stay home today.
Tämä flunssa uhkaa viimein voittaa vastustukseni, joten taitaa tulla lepopäivä.

Garbage (not the band)

I am coming down with a cold so no bike riding today. Instead we went for a slow walk by the river. I was just saying something to my husband about how brown and grey everything is at this time of year, when we started spotting some colorful stuff. Too bad it wasn't flowers or anything like that... Junk. All kinds of plastic canisters and bottles here and there along the riverside. I'm sure some of them were washed away with the floods with no intention of littering, but then there were ice-cream boxes and liqueur bottles that had to be just thrown away by someone. I don't know what they were thinking. Anyway, we collected together every piece we could find and we're hoping to go back with garbage bags. Can't expect this globe to take care of us unless we take care of it first!
Flunssa on iskemässä, joten tänään ei päästy pyöräilemään. Sen sijaan käytiin rauhallisella kävelyllä joella. Pääsin juuri sanomasta miehelleni kuinka harmaata ja ruskeaa kaikki on tähän aikaan vuodesta, kun siellä täällä alkoi pilkahdella väriläiskiä. Harmi, etten puhu nyt kukista... Romua. Kaikenlaisia muovisia kanistereita ja pulloja pitkin jokivartta. Olen varma, että osa niistä on huuhtoutunut tulvan mukana ihan vahingossa, mutta jäätelörasiat ja likööripullot eivät taida tipahtaa luontoon ihan itsestään. En tajua miten kukaan kehtaa heittää niitä muualle kuin roskikseen. Joka tapauksessa keräsimme yhteen kasaan kaikki mitä löysimme ja ajattelimme palata takaisin jätesäkin kanssa. Ei kai maapallo meistä huolehdi, jos emme me ensin siitä!
