Good.

Sunday morning I was sitting *here* in a gorgeous sunlight. I had had a very good week and this quiet moment with the morning newspaper was a great closure. With *these things* in my mind I had been extra positive all week, no matter what happened. Now I'm starting a new week with the same attitude. Why don't you all join me!

I'm making something cute of the leftover yarns of *these*... There will be a give-away soon!
Teen jotain söpöä *näiden* jämälangoista... Pian järjestetään arvonta!

Are these yours..?

Apparently it's possible to get bored of something you are making for yourself while you are making it... That's what happened to me with these socks. It's been a long project - I've been knitting other stuff in between, and somehow I just got tired of looking at these before they were even finished. So now I have a pair of high-leg socks and no use for them! In case you happen to need socks, either for yourself or as a gift for a friend, these can be yours for 25€ (approximately $33). They are about size 37-39 European (US women 6.5 to 8.5) and just below the knee. If you need more specific measurements or wish to buy these, contact me by e-mail: annavee (at) mail.com

EDIT: The socks are now on their way to dear Heidi. Thank you, my friend, I hope you'll like them!

Decisions

A few years ago I worked as a children's English course leader. I was preparing for another class when in came the first student. A clever, talented, sweet girl with wisdom in her eyes - the kind of wisdom you would imagine someone has after a very long life. She talked about everyday things until the conversation took a turn to something more. "Mum won't be home for the rest of the week", she said. "She's going to have surgery." Is that so, I said and added that I hope it's nothing too serious. She hesitated a little and her voice sounded small and fragile: "They are removing one of her breasts because there's cancer in it." There was a little pause, then she asked me: "Why do you think they have to take the breast away?" I was going to say I hope she'll be okay soon, but when she looked at me with her big blue eyes I knew she wasn't reaching out for hope. Hope wouldn't be good enough for her. So instead I said: I am sure she will be alright, that's why they are doing the operation. To make sure it's all gone and that she will be fine. "Yeah...", she said, thought about it for a moment and seemed to make a decision. Then she grinned and said: "I wonder if Dad and I will manage to make dinner while she's in the hospital!"
Muutama vuosi sitten työskentelin lasten englanninkurssin ohjaajana.

I still don't know how things turned out for this girl and her mother. But I do know that mind does work wonders. If you decide to stay positive, no matter what the subject, you will more likely achieve a positive result. On the other hand, if you decide things will never work out, there's a big chance they really won't. Have you made any big decisions lately?

There's coffee - and then there's coffee

I love weekend coffee moments. Yes, the weekend ones. We do not drink a lot of coffee during weekdays because we're rarely home at the same time. If we happen to be home together, we may set up the coffeemaker a couple of times a week to have a cup or two of good old regular coffee. Which is nice, of course.
Rakastan viikonloppujen kahvihetkiä. Niin, nimenomaan viikonloppujen. Emme juo kovinkaan paljon kahvia arkisin, kun harvemmin osumme kotiin yhtä aikaa. Jos satumme molemmat olemaan kotona, saatamme pari kertaa viikossa keittää yhden-kaksi kuppia ihan tavallista kahvia. Se on toki mukavaa.

But in the weekends it is special, you know. We have an espresso machine and I have slowly but surely taught myself to make perfect coffee. (I'm pretty good with latte already, lately I've been practising for the ultimate cappucino.) Any of you who have an espresso machine know that making coffee with it is not a two minute deal. That's why we only have time for it on the weekends. But even though it's quite a process, I love it. Adding the fresh water, choosing your favorite coffee brand, warming the cups before filling them with this dark, foamy bliss (oh yes, you do warm the cups, how exquisite is that!) Not even the milk is poured in from the carton; it is either steamed or foamed first.
Viikonloppuisin kahvittelussa on kuitenkin jotain erityistä.

As I sit there, in the *coffee patio*, sipping pure velvet - not even the machine clean up operation bothers me. (I think it bothers my husband, though. That's why whenever I suggest he learned to use the machine, he takes me to a cafè instead...)

To make it all better

Yesterday I was ill and stayed home. It's weird how your mind turns blue, too, if your body isn't feeling well. Here I was, having a stomach ache, feverish, seeing the beautiful sun through the window, watching TV (there was absolutely nothing on), having too much time to think about silly negative things in my life. By the evening I was feeling so crappy and sorry for myself, I even snapped at my dear husband for no reason. I love him for seeing through it and not giving into a fight.

This morning I decided to make it up both to him and myself and started baking as soon as I got up. I mean, who doesn't like fresh, hot bread straight from the oven?
Tänä aamuna päätin hyvittää kaiken hänelle ja itsellenikin ryhtymällä leipomaan heti kun sain silmät auki. Kuka nyt ei tykkäisi uunituoreesta leivästä?

YEAST BREAD

2,5dl water
11g dry yeast (or 30g fresh)
1 teaspoon of salt
1 tablespoon of syrup (or 2 teaspoons of sugar)
0,25dl vegetable oil
6dl yeast bread flour (you can also use regular wheat flour)

If you are using fresh yeast, mix it with warm (37C) water with salt and syrup/sugar. If you use dry yeast, mix it with a part of the flour, then stir it well into warm water (42C) with salt and syrup/sugar.
Add flour until you have about half of it left. Give the dough a good stir. Then add the rest of the flour and finally the vegetable oil. Set the dough into a warm place and cover with a kitchen towel until it has doubled it's size. Work it into a round bread, cut decorations with a sharp knife and let stay under the towel for about 10 more minutes. Bake in the oven in 200 degrees Celcius for 20-25 minutes.

HIIVALEIPÄ

2,5dl vettä
11g kuivahiivaa (tai 30g tuoretta)
1tl suolaa

Lisää taikinaan jauhoja, kunnes niitä on noin puolet jäljellä. Sekoita taikinaa tässä vaiheessa kunnolla. Lisää sitten loput jauhot ja viimeisenä öljy. Anna kohota lämpimässä paikassa liinan alla, kunnes taikina on paisunut kaksinkertaiseksi. Leivo taikinasta pyöreä leipä, koristele tekemällä viiltoja terävällä veitsellä ja kohota liinan alla vielä kymmenisen minuuttia. Paista 200 asteessa 20-25 minuuttia.

Cinema

I thought I'd show you just a little glimpse of one of the rooms we have renewed, the one *this piece of furniture* now calls home. As soon as the sofa and the carpet arrive I will show you the rest.

(I have been swept away by work again, can't wait for the weekend to have more time to see what you all are up to!
On ollut taas niin pitkiä päiviä töissä - viikonloppuna ehdin jälleen lukemaan mitä teille kaikille kuuluu!)

Keychains

I made three braided keychains. Judging by the colors I chose the spring is right around the corner!
Punoin kolme avaimenperää. Valitsemieni värien perusteella kevät on kohta täällä!

Saturday

Three hours of walking in the sun. Having a sauna in just a while. A glass of wine after that. There's nothing more I could ask for. (Well, maybe a bite of chocolate - but you can't have it all, can you.)
Kolme tuntia kävelyä auringonpaisteessa. Saunaan ihan kohta.

Entry before and after

If you have been following my blog you know we've been making some changes in our home. We bought our house 6 years ago and almost all the rooms had started to look like they needed some updating. I had already painted our whole *kitchen* last summer, then we created a cosy *coffee patio* in the beginning of this year. One by one we are renewing the rooms in our home - there's still a lot to do (and A LOT of ideas...) but we are not in a hurry! This time I thought I'd show you what I did with the entry.

In the entry we have the fuse panel of the house, and below a couple of closets for shoes. These were all covered from top to bottom with a very ugly bamboo curtain, which made the entry even smaller. I actually like bamboo curtains a lot, but this one was probably 15 years old, broken, and not very pretty to look at. Somehow it just stayed there when we moved in because the fuse panel would have been even nastier...

I took the bamboo curtain down and painted the wall and the top of the closet grey. The rest of the walls are white with the same grey, scruffy decorations I used in our kitchen. As I brought in the rose painting, I realised pink would be the highlight color of this little place.
Now, there was still an issue with the ugly fuse panel. Some years ago I found 4 grey rose curtains at a flea market - they happened to be the exact same grey as the wall I had just painted. The pink fabric on the sides used to be a curtain, too; I remember it from our home back in the '80s! So I just sewed it all together and the problem was solved. (My husband hates it when I spare "useless old stuff" instead of throwing it away - well, ha ha to him!) I also realised I had created the perfect spot for all my vintage cameras.
On the other wall there was a door that we hadn't closed one single time since we moved into this house. We took it down and dragged it up to the attic - okay, I have to admit hubby did all the hard work on this one... By removing the door and hanging a mirror on the wall we made the entry feel even more spacious. (Behind that door you can see a glimpse of the entrance of our *coffee patio*.)
As a final touch I brought in two small rugs. We got these from my mother-in-law years ago, and they seemed to be the wrong color whenever I tried to use them in different rooms. Not this time, they are the perfect rosy pink.

I'd say this was a very non-expensive makeover!
Varsin halvalla toteutettu muodonmuutos, vai mitä!

Here and there

It's a weird feeling. Being in the middle of nowhere, hearing nothing, seeing no-one, almost not existing. At the same time knowing that within 4 hours you could be sitting in a plane on your way to a city with bright lights and a population of millions.

French toast, anyone?

There must be as many ways to make French toast as there are cooks, I believe. I mix some milk and a little bit of vanilla sugar, soak thick slices of white bread in it, throw them onto a buttered frying pan until they are beautifully golden and brown. Then I sprinkle a hint of sugar and cinnamon on top, and serve them with homemade jam that I got from a friend. How do you make them?
(For some funny reason here in Finland they are called "poor knights"!)
Köyhien ritareiden tekemiseen on kai yhtä monta tapaa kuin tekijöitäkin. Itse sekoitan maitoon hieman vaniljasokeria, kastelen siinä paksuja ranskanleipäviipaleita, paistan pannulla voissa kullanruskeiksi molemmin puolin. Sitten ripottelen pinnalle hitusen sokeria ja kanelia, ja tarjoilen ystävältä saadun kotitekoisen hillon kera. Onko sinulla oma resepti?

More sun

Went back *here*, this time with company.
Menin takaisin *tänne*, tällä kertaa otin muitakin mukaan.
