Easter bonfire

Easter bonfires are common around the part of Finland I live in. They are burned on Holy Saturday and people used to believe they would chase the bad spirits away. When I was a child this was the most important Easter event for me. It was exciting to stay up late and watch the big fire. Sometimes our parents also drove us around town to see other fires - but more often people came to see ours (there's a field right in front of my parents' house and we were able to make big fires there).
Joskus vanhempamme kuljettivat meitä autolla ympäri kylää muita kokkoja katsomassa, mutta useimmiten ihmiset vierailivat meidän kokollamme (vanhempieni talon edessä on pelto, johon pystyimme tekemään varsin suuria kokkoja).

When I became older the bonfires sort of lost their meaning. I haven't been to one in years. But this year I noticed I would have loved to have one. My husband said the same thing. I guess when you get older you long for the things you had in your childhood... Anyway, since my Dad passed away we haven't had the same kind of bonfires we used to. These photos are from 1998, when my husband and I had only been dating for a few months. I remember how we went to the forest with my Dad and collected a huge pile of tree branches. It certainly was a fire to remember and I cherish those moments even more now. I'm thinking next year we need to build a big one again.
Vanhemmaksi tultuani kokot jotenkin menettivät merkityksensä. En ole käynyt kokolla vuosiin. Tänä pääsiäisenä kuitenkin huomasin kaipaavani sitä. Mieheni sanoi ihan samaa.

  1. I didn't know this custom for Easter. Sure, it must be a nice moment. I understand that you want to do your turn the most beautiful and the biggest bonfire. It's good to keep things that your father has passed on to you.

    1. Menthe Blanche - These fires are common around my area but not even in all Finland. I found some information about Easter bonfires on Wikipedia, apparently some other countries have this custom, too. They are beautiful in the darkening night, I can tell you that! :)

  2. Another great custom you have. I love bonfires. In Germany, where I come from, we have these huge fires on the longest day and shortest night, in June... You are right, as you get older, you miss the traditions you were raised with...Take care!

    1. Heidi - Yes, we have the midsummer fires, too! But not always - the Easter fires are more common where I live. I like them both, but in the middle of the summer there is less contrast, as we live so close to the arctic circle that the sun doesn't get down. During Easter it still gets dark at night, so the fires look really pretty. :) I will make it my goal to arrange a bonfire next year! ;)
